Job Description
SUMMARY
This position, under the direction of the Manager of Engineering, is responsible for all aspects of engineering capital project development and implementation as it relates to supporting Tru-Exterior operations. Activities will include scoping and implementing capital projects and major expense projects, related to extrusion, material compounding, plant infrastructure, and plant safety. Other responsibilities will include supporting compound development, new ingredient evaluations, and new product introductions. The scope of the responsibility includes and continuous improvement of existing systems, integration of new equipment into the plant, and implementing best practices and processes to improve performance. The incumbent will have primary responsibility to ensure proper design of manufacturing equipment, continuous improvement, project management, safety, and training.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Leads the capital budget planning process for the Salisbury (NC), East Spencer (NC) and Latta (SC) plants to ensure the success of all projects required to maintain operational readiness by specifying improvements on existing production techniques and to develop new products and production methods.
- Supports new product R&D activities to include evaluating new concepts, sourcing equipment required to make the new products and ensuring the hand off to production has been properly executed.
- Facilitates the vendor identification process, and collaborates with procurement to develop the request for quote packages (RFQ) in support of the bid process.
- Collaborates with operations and maintenance to develop capital requests as they relate to repair, maintenance, and modification of manufacturing tooling.
- Ensures all manufacturing equipment and processes comply with federal and state safety and environmental regulations.
- Acquires, analyzes and presents data to the manufacturing team as required to resolve any problems and initiates engineering resolution for production issues.
- Provide CAD support for products, R&D initiatives, CAPEX projects, maintenance, and operations for facilities.
- Recommend and implement improvements in manufacturing processes, equipment design to support improved manufacturing productivity and/or product design and functionality.
- Interface with manufacturing and maintenance personnel to identify opportunities for improvement and support the operations.
- Leads TPM, sustainability, energy reduction programs and continuous improvement.
- Lead events in lean initiatives such as 6S, VSM and Kaizen.
- Identifies, plans, executes and communicates results for process improvement projects that improve business performance in the form of material yields, machine efficiencies and operational costs.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the business.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Five to seven years in an engineering position.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Plastic Processing, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong background in manufacturing systems, data collection and statistical analysis in dynamic fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge and experience in design for manufacturing, quality and service, and design of experiments.
- Knowledge in failure reporting, diagnostics and data, trend analysis and corrective action.
- Leadership ability to get results with and through people.
- Precise and articulate written and oral communication; ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations and demonstrate individual and group presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate upwardly to top management and downward to a wide range of audiences.
- Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
- Must be self-directed and motivated and able to multi-task in fast-paced, 24/7 manufacturing environment.
- Work schedule flexibility, with advance notice, to accommodate needs of the business.
- Strong computer skills to include: CAD (SolidWorks and or AutoCAD), Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Minitab.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, this position must make general decisions requiring judgement and perform activities requiring sustained concentration.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is sometimes moderate when working in an office, however, some of the work may be required in the operating units which mandates usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators. Travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
