Job Description

The Engineering Process Specialist provides engineering design, orders equipment and coordinates the construction of expense and capital projects as assigned and ensures projects meet scope, cost and schedule requirements.  The Engineering Process Specialist provides engineering support to the maintenance organization to allow the plant to meet its cost and production goals. The Engineering Process Specialist performs the primary thinking encompassed by this job description, complies with all Company policies and procedures, and fully supports Company goals of continuous improvement and operational excellence at strategic and tactical levels including reviewing area of responsibility for improvement opportunities to initiate projects or communicate ideas to management as well as active participation on project teams.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops the general plan for a project, prepares a budget estimate and obtains approval for the plan.
  • Provides conceptual and detailed designs for instrumentation and control systems in accordance with good engineering and safety practices, government regulations, plant specifications, applicable codes and underwriter requirements.
  • Initiates procurement of materials and communicates with purchasing, vendors and stores to control expediting and receiving of material.
  • Inspects new equipment for quality and conformance to specification.
  • Prepares work descriptions and drafts of engineering contracts for outside contract work, contacts contractors as necessary to obtain quotations on work to be performed.  Prepares bid comparison, selects contractor, prepare requisition and submits for approval.
  • Coordinates field installation, inspects and accepts work.
  • Investigates and studies major maintenance problems and proposes solutions, provides engineering consultation and technical guidance for instrumentation and control systems including safety instrumental systems (SISs), distributed control systems (DCSs) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) as required by Maintenance and Production.
  • Coordinates the activities of consulting firms when necessary.  Consults with other engineering personnel and vendors and reviews trade journals and other professional publications in order to stay informed on materials, equipment and design methods.
  • Contributes to creating and maintaining a favorable plant image by encouraging positive relations with employees and the community, encouraging maximum safety efforts and maintaining ethical practices in the plant.
  • Performs special projects as assigned, i.e., obtaining regulatory information, sharing information on common industrial topics with local industry, provide information to underwriters on testing requirements and procedures, enlisting consulting services and other coordination activities as required to ensure effective engineering services.
  • Maintains engineering records.
  • Performs other duties as required and assigned to ensure an effective Engineering Group.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s degree in engineering discipline or progressive engineering/technical experience acceptable to management. Bachelors degree in engineering discipline preferred.
  • 5 years of engineering design experience; chemical or petrochemical plant experience preferred.
  • Emerson DCS experience and Allen Bradley PLC experience preferred.
