DESCRIPTION

The Sr. Safety Specialist establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, incident-free, and healthy work environment by working cooperatively in several plants with other departments with H&S on-going concerns. The Sr. Safety Specialist develops, implements, and administer internal facility security functions and performs periodic security inspections.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

May include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Complies with Westlake Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Actively participates in the execution and management of Westlake’s safety program
  • Responsibilities include planning and assisting in the scheduling of employee training
  • Provides technical advising in support of safety committee activities
  • Investigates health, safety incidents. Prepares a report of findings and recommends corrective actions to management
  • Ensures that field operations comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), as well as HIP H&S manual and practices
  • Audits facilities to detect existing or potential safety and health hazards and recommends corrective or preventative measures
  • Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected
  • Recommends implements and monitors control measures of exposure to hazardous material or conditions
  • Provides technical guidance to management regarding occupational health & safety concerns
  • Contributes to developing new training associated with the introduction of new courses.
  • Maintains inspection reports and records and advises senior management of deficiencies and remedial/disciplinary efforts to improve deficiencies
  • Maintains safety files and records. Completes all required forms and paperwork
  • Participate in the development of long-term strategies intended to reduce the risk for the organization and its employees
  • Creates and distributes security manuals, documents, and records. Maintains facility security requirements, policies, and implements procedures for safeguarding proprietary and customer furnished data
  • Performs periodic and random security inspections and prepares security reports as necessary. Issues security violation citations as required by inspections
  • Promotes and maintain near misses’ program forms handled by employees

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years' experience in functional role

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Wear all required personal protective equipment (hearing, vision, and hardhat protection)
  • Move or traverse about the facilities
  • Ascend/descend stairs and ladders
  • Work around dust, chemicals, and other substances, and in various environmental conditions
  • Withstand exposure to temperature extremes inside or out
  • Stand for up to 12 hours performing shift work or in a stationary position
  • Work in constant noise levels above 85 decibels
  • Handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls
  • Able to lift/move up to 50 pounds
  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day
